There is always a Hyrule Field, there is (almost) always a 3D Mario hub world, there is always a Christmas tree the surrounding details change and expand over time, but the spirit of these games is transcendent.

I don’t need to play those N64 originals–wonderful though they are–because playing their more modern iterations has just the same effect.Įach time I play a Mario or Zelda game, it connects me with the past through a returning character or item, a recognisable riff in the music, or perhaps the sight of a mountain with a ring of cloud around it in the distance. The evolution of these games–and the locations within them–over the years helps preserve those childhood memories and keep them alive. Likewise, traversing Hyrule Field on horseback in Ocarina of Time felt like the greatest freedom imaginable in a game, but of course Breath of The Wild has gone and recaptured that feeling on modern hardware and expanded it by a scale of hundreds if not thousands. In my wistful mind’s eye, Princess Peach’s castle on the N64 remains one of the most majestic things I’ve seen in gaming, even though of course it’s a low-poly, murky-textured cardboard cutout by today’s standards.
